Lawmaker announces engagement to girlfriend… but home state won’t recognize Iowa marriage

Talk about bittersweet.

Illinois State Representative Deb Mell from Chicago announced on Wednesday that she was engaged to her girlfriend of six years, Christin Baker.

The couple plan to travel to Iowa to exchange their vows, which will not be recognized by their home state when they return. (more…)

Lower East Side gay activist Harry Wieder killed by cab

“Harry Wieder, the New York LGBT activist and self-described ‘disabled, gay, Jewish, leftist, middle aged dwarf who ambulates with crutches,’ died last night when a taxi cab struck him while he was crossing the street after leaving a community board meeting. He was 57.”

UK conservatives suspend anti-gay politician; would Republicans ever do the same?

Conservative Party party leaders suspended a politician who claimed that to be gay falls ‘somewhere between unfortunate and simply wrong,’ and expressed support for anti-gay discrimination in school curricula and hiring practices by churches. (more…)

Al Franken to Introduce Anti-Bullying Legislation

If anyone was laughing when Al Franken got elected, it’s time to take him very seriously.

The Minnesota Senator said yesterday he plans to introduce an anti-bullying bill addressing LGBT youth.
