We know as much about opera as we do about professional sports, which isn’t much.
But it’s somehow still surprising to read in Opera News that one of the world’s leading sopranos – Patricia Racette (above) – has a wife.
Even better, the spouse is another opera star.
We were tipped off to the story online, by the way; we’ve never actually seen a copy of Opera News. Here’s how the magazine reports its encounter with Racette:
On one of New York’s unbearably humid summer days, I walk into soprano Patricia Racette’s Manhattan apartment at the appointed time.
“‘Come on in,” says Racette. “Beth wants to meet you before we start!’ And there on her laptop screen, via Skype, is the image of Racette’s wife, mezzo Beth Clayton — in Munich for performances of Trouble in Tahiti. We exchange pleasantries.
Racette announces that Beth’s eyebrows are ‘just adorable.’ Clayton admonishes Racette to use coasters under our drinks. The two women sweetly say goodbye, and our interview begins.”
