Lesbians and gay men still smoke more than hetero people, study says

Back when we helped launch Out magazine in 1992, we remember a lot of soul-searching about whether to accept tobacco ads.

Ultimately, the decision was “no”.

Since more lesbians and gay men smoked, on average, than other people, we didn’t want to contribute.

So we read with a heavy heart results of a new study that reveals nearly 40% of gay women smoke, compared to 18% of their heterosexual counterparts; for men, the numbers are 33% of gay men vs. 24% of straight guys.

The research comes from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  It’s reported on The Advocate, via gay news blog RaysList.

You can read the university’s own press release here.  PS – Remember the American Cancer Society‘s anti-smoking posters from the 1970s?  Our favorite, above.
